Kyrie Irving Complains About Nets

Grace Higgins | January 18th, 2020

After a 117-106 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, Kyrie Irving sounded off about the current situation of the Brooklyn Nets and offered his criticism of the team moving forward.

The Nets are 18-22 and hanging on by a prayer to the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. After the game, Irving commented and said the Nets need one or two more pieces around himself, Kevin Durant, Deandre Jordan and the other young players on the team.

The comments are funny for a number of reasons. The first reason being that the one pieces the team is missing, is currently sitting on the bench with an Achilles injury. When the Nets signed Durant, they knew he would miss the entirety of this season, ultimately wasting a year of Irving’s prime basketball years. Once Durant is back, and assuming he’s back to his normal ways, the Nets should be a worthy contender in the Eastern Conference.

The other aspect of his comments are how well the Nets played while Irving was out with an injury. In the starting role, Spencer Dinwiddie performed as if he were the multiple time all-star on the team. Also, the Boston Celtics are an entirely new and improved team without Irving leading the way.

As a player who has basically forced himself out of two different franchises, Irving is attempting to replicate that success with the Nets. With the Cleveland Cavaliers, Irving threatened to get season ending knee surgery if the team didn’t trade him. And with the Celtics, Irving was such a bad apple with the team that the team couldn’t wait for him to leave.

The scary part about Durant being sidelined this season is the mood swings from Irving when the team that he’s leading is underperforming. Durant and Irving are paired on the Nets because of their friendship. One has to wonder if Durant would be in management’s ear to explore trade options for Irving if his attitude continues.
