Chiefs, Packers Advance

Grace Higgins | January 13th, 2020

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Houston Texans 51-31 and the Green Bay Packers beat the Seattle Seahawks 28-23.

The Texans were leading the Chiefs 24-0 in the middle of the second quarter. That’s when the Chiefs did the unthinkable.

In just over three minutes, the Chiefs scored three touchdowns, all passing touchdowns from Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes passed for 321 yards and five touchdowns, while leading the team in rushing yards with 53. The Chiefs would score again before half from Mahomes to Travis Kelce, who caught his third unanswered touchdown pass. He finished with 134 receiving yards and three touchdowns. At times, it seemed the Texans forgot he was on the field.

It took 16 total plays for the Chiefs to comeback from a 24-0 deficit to lead 28-24 at halftime.

The slaughter didn’t stop there, as Damien Williams scored two short touchdowns to blow the game open 41-24. The Texans showed some fight, with Deshaun Watson scoring on a five-yard touchdown run. Watson passed for 388 yards and two touchdowns, adding 37 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Another Mahomes touchdown and a field goal would end the game and put Texans fans out of their misery. The comeback was one of the biggest comebacks in NFL postseason history. The Chiefs will host the Tennessee Titans next week in the AFC Championship game.

In a rematch of the 2014 NFC Championship game, the Seahawks traveled to Wisconsin to play in the frigid temperatures to play the Packers. That game saw the Seahawks down 19-3 late in the fourth quarter, before winning in overtime to advance to the Super Bowl.

This game saw the Packers score quick when Aaron Rodgers found Davante Adams for a 20-yard touchdown. Rodgers passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns, while Adams caught eight passes for 160 receiving yards and two touchdowns. This time around, the 13-3 Packers have a legit defense and running game to help Rodgers.

The running game came to fruition as Aaron Jones scored two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter. Jones rushed for 62 yards and two touchdowns. The Packers were ahead 21-3 at halftime.

Russell Wilson refused to let the Seahawks be blown off the field, as he channeled his inner John Elway to lead the overachieving Seahawks back in the game. Wilson has a quality about him that makes you believe he can pull off the biggest of upsets. No matter the talent around him, he can work with it. Marshawn Lynch scored from the one-yard line to give the Packers crowd a scare, before Adams caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers.

A Tyler Lockett touchdown pass from Wilson and another Lynch touchdown run wouldn’t be enough, as the Packers defense held on late to win 28-23. Wilson passed for 277 yards and one touchdown.

The Packers will travel to San Francisco to play the 49ers in the NFC Championship game.
