You May Have Been Piloted By A King!

Grace Higgins | November 8th, 2018

For over 20 years the King of the Netherlands was flying at least twice a month as a co-pilot, and his passengers did not even know! So this may mean you were flown around Europe by a king.

Willem-Alexander took his place on the throne in 2013 but he kept flying in the cockpit also because he finds flying simply amazing. He wishes to continue to be a co-pilot but has advised he is going to learn how to fly Boeing 737s by himself.

The king has flown a Fokker aircraft at least 70 times, for the government and also as a KLM Cityhopper. Cityhopper is mainly business traveler flights for European destinations around UK, Germany, and Norway. The king has stated multiple times if he was not born in a palace then he would be flying big passenger plane like Boeing 747.

The big surprise is he has never used his real name while being a co-pilot and is barely every recognized so this means you may have been flown by a king on your last business trip in Europe. Some passengers have however recognized his voice.

Though what you really may not know is there are many royals flying around, the Sultan of Brunei, for example, is known for flying his own Boeing 747. Prince Charles from the United Kingdom is a fully qualified pilot and so are his sons. Prince William even flies as an RAF air ambulance helicopter pilot on some occasions. And Jordan’s King Abdullah is also a trained pilot.

Despite being a king with royal expectations, Willem-Alexander is very enthusiastic about being a co-pilot in the future. He later claimed the best thing for him was to have a hobby where he could relax and enjoy life.
