Does Yawning Have Anything To Do With Being Tired?

Yawning is one of the most uncontrollable and contagious body actions. Sometimes you may just find yourself thinking about yawning, suddenly to be yawning yourself. You may see your friend yawn or even an animal, again, suddenly you are yawning! And did you know that even today scientist are really not sure why we yawn at all?

One thing is for sure, you should never stop yourself from yawning. It is a necessary body function and should never be stifled if you need to yawn then that means your body needs it. Are you just a very bored and tired person?

No probably not, one of the first theories about yawning was that it was to bring in a quick jolt of oxygen. That your brain was falling asleep and needed a quick boost to wake up. This did not turn out to be the case, recent studies show that yawning does not raise oxygen levels in the body at all. Also, do you yawn when you exercise? No not at all, and this would be a situation where the body could definitely need some extra oxygen.

What is the next best theory about yawning then? The most widely accepted speculation today is that it is a way our body regulates brain temperature. A rush of cool oxygen will help your brain stay cool.

For example, when you are tired or suffering from sleep deprivation it is known that exhaustion is a cause of rising brain temperature. So yes you will undoubtedly yawn more when tired, however, it does not help you stay more awake. The body is helping your brain to keep working at the right temperature. Basically, you could say that yawning is the air conditioning system for your brain.

The theory is further supported by the knowledge that we yawn more when suffering from a migraine. Migraines are mainly caused by clotting in the blood vessels found in your brain. By yawning your brain is trying to stay cooler and stop the clotting.

What about people who always yawn when I yawn? Well if that is the case you probably just have some really nice friends. Yawning is actually one of the most contagious actions on the planet. And the only answer we have to as why this happens is that it is a way of showing empathy and bonding. So remember when someone is yawning at your next party, they are not bored, they just want to really be your friend!
