Woman Saves Dog Living in Dump

The photos were devastating to see. For a woman named Crystal Carson, she couldn’t believe her eyes when she first saw images of a dog named Kratos. The Kangol Shepherd dog was living in a landfill in an area of Turkey called Corum. The dog seemed like he was so old in the images and Crystal, who cofounded the group called Rescuers Without Borders (RWB) could see each of his ribs and even his spine. Worse yet, Kratos had mange and had lost most of his fur. She was worried he would die in that dirty landfill all alone. Sadly, Kratos wasn’t completely alone: there are hundreds of dogs living in the landfill.

The dogs survive on garbage and any food scraps they find and sleep on garbage or dig holes to stay warm. Crystal founded the RWB group with a friend so she could help the dogs get food, medical care, and even homes. Sadly, the group doesn’t have many resources so they cannot help every dog. They have to pick and choose which dogs to save, but typically try to rescue the puppies because they typically can’t survive in the dump. They also focus on older dogs who also face a slim chance of survival.

Kratos, the sad older dog she couldn’t stop thinking about, was eight years old. As the cold season approached, they knew they needed to help him if they wanted him to survive the winter. So, a group went to the dump to try to catch him, which was easy because he couldn’t move due the emaciation and dehydration. He was very hungry, but very sweet. He received treatment for eye infections and dehydration, but otherwise he was fairly healthy. Kratos is now living at a rescue facility in Turkey.

It is against the law to export Kangal dogs out of Turkey because they are considered a “national treasure.” So, Kratos is now living at the rescue and is slowly growing back his fur and is happy to have a good meal and warm place to sleep.
