Thunder End Portland Losing Streak, Fields Confirms Move to OSU

Grace Higgins | January 5th, 2019

The Oklahoma City Thunder came into Friday night with a terrible record in Portland. For the last nine trips to the city, they had been beaten by the Trail Blazers. Furthermore, they had lost six in a row overall. In other words, they were getting sick of it. After the first half, which saw Portland end it up by five points, it looked like the streak would continue on for another day. Paul George, though, had other ideas. Just a couple of days removed from a show-off performance in his hometown of L.A. against the Lakers, George showed why he is a superstar in the game by scoring 37 points. He wasn’t great with his shooting, which was 10 of 23 from the field, but somehow he kept making shots when they needed them to go in. Russell Westbrook also had a big night with 31 points, helping them to overturn what was a ten point deficit in the first half and turning it into a a ten point lead of their own with four minutes to go. Just when you thought it was over and OKC’s stars had done enough, the Trail Blazers battled back with a ferocious rally. Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum had chances to tie or win the game late, but George iced the game with two free throws with just over four seconds remaining to give OKC a sweet 111-109 win to end the poor run against Portland.

In college football news, we finally have confirmation over the future of quarterback Justin Fields. After playing limited snaps for the Georgia Bulldogs under Kirby Smart, it was reported for weeks that he would be joining Ohio State. That has now been made official by former no.1 recruit in the country, and it looks as if he will attempt to get a hardship waiver to enable him to play in 2019 for the Buckeyes. With Dwayne Haskins, a Heisman candidate no less, set to leave by the looks of it, Fields should be left relatively unchallenged for the QB role. This was not the case at UGA behind Jake Fromm. According to the vaunted Todd McShay, draft guru, Haskins is the top QB available for the NFL Draft currently. Fields, then, will have some very big shoes to fill as OSU makes a change heading into a new era with the departure of both Haskins and coach Urban Meyer.
