Musician Chris Connell committed suicide in Detroit, Michigan in May of 2017. Nearly two years after his death, he won his third Grammy award, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. His young children took to the stage to accept the award on behalf of their father who was 52 at the time of his death. Connell won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance for his song, ‘When Bad Does Good.’ His 13 year old son, Christopher was the first to speak on behalf of his father.

Christopher said, “I never thought we would be standing here without my dad. I’m sure he would be proud and honored. He was known for many things, he was a rock icon, the godfather of grunge and the creator of a movement. While he touched the hearts of millions, most importantly he is known for us for the being the greatest father in our ear.” Christopher’s 12 year old sister Toni said, “His voice was his vision and his music was his peace. This is for you daddy and we love you so much.” Connell’s family walked the red carpet together prior to the ceremony.

Connell was best known as the lead singer of ‘Soundgarden’ and ‘Audioslave.’ Christopher and Toni are the children of Connell’s second wife, Vicky Karayiannis. His first wife was Susan Silver, the couple married in 1990 and had a daughter Lillian Jean. They divorced in 2004 and engaged in a bitter battle over child custody and possessions. Connell said in 2006, that he finally was able to get 15 cherished guitars back from Silver via a court order. The singer battled drugs and alcohol for several years but had it managed. He said he relapsed after his first marriage fell apart. Connell was found dead by his bodyguard at his hotel room in the MGM Grand hotel in Detroit. He had performed with ‘Soundgarden’ earlier in the evening.
