A dog named Sky was a lot of things: she was cold, very hungry, and all alone. She found herself all alone outside of the Delaware Humane Association and she was so thin you could see all of her ribs and her spine and she was huddled against a fence to try to protect herself form the wind and cold. A staff member spotted Sky outside the moment they arrived at the facility and rushed outside to bring her in the warm building. Upon bringing the cold, starving dog inside they noticed something: she had a note from her former owner attached to her collar. The note said the following:

“Please take care of Sky. She is 6 years old and friendly. I couldn’t take care of her. I became homeless and couldn’t feed her. She is not sick just hungry, very friendly. Please find her a home. Please.”

It seems that the dog had been hungry for some time, based on how thin she was. Despite her very frail condition, Sky just loved to be around people and was as friendly and loving as the note described. The staff spent lots of time giving her attention, which Sky appreciated. Sky got a good meal and a warm bed that night, but the staff kept thinking about how her former owner probably didn’t have those same things. Sadly, they did not know how to find him and they worried he would never contact them because abandoning a dog is illegal.

However, Sky’s story got out in the media and then the man called the shelter. He said he wanted to be anonymous and didn’t need help, but was working to get his life together. He has a large family, he explained, and both he and his wife had lost their jobs and they could no longer care for the dog. He did the right thing, and Sky is now thriving and gaining weight. Once she is ready, she will go to a loving forever home!
