Special Puppy Found Floating in Creek

Grace Higgins | January 8th, 2019

Two highway workers had anything but a normal day on the job recently. They stepped out of their work truck to perform some maintenance in Kentucky when they saw something odd in a nearby creek. It was a little white puppy trying desperately to keep its head above the cold water. The men dropped what they were doing and rushed to save her. When they got closer, they couldn’t believe what had happened: the puppy was inside a plastic trash bag and inside that bag was a second bag filled with heavy rocks. The puppy had found an opening in the bag and had managed to pike her head out because was wasn’t closed. The bag weighed about ten pounds.

The puppy was cold, wet, and had hypothermia from being in the icy creek. So, the men rushed her to a nearby animal shelter for help. When she arrived, staff worked quickly to warm her up with towels and hairdryers. She was shaking and couldn’t keep her head up, so they rushed her to a veterinary hospital for treatment. They worried she would not survive. Her temperature was very low and she was shaking when she arrived, but after a few hours she warmed up and clearly felt much better. She found a toy she loved and fell asleep.

The dog, who they named Chapel, is an Australian shepherd and a double merle. This means her parents had merle (or white) coats, and typically their puppies are blind and deaf. Chapel is both blind and deaf. She is completely deaf, but they believe she can see shadows. It’s believed she was born to a breeder who didn’t want her because she was blind and deaf, so they dumped her in the creek to die. Despite her special needs and history, she loves people and enjoys toys, too. She will continue to recover at the shelter, and then she will go to Speak for the Unspoken, a group in Ohio that helps special needs dogs. Eventually, she will be ready for her forever home.
