The Hobbit is a film based on the novel by J. R. R. Tolkien of the same name: The Hobbit. The story focuses on a hobbit called Bilbo Baggins and he is accompanied by many characters from the Tolkien universe: Dwarfs, Elves, Wizards and many other magical creatures. As you can tell this story is one of fiction where the reader falls deep in a different universe, one filled with action, magic, and adventure.

In the story, one of the main plotlines is that the dwarfs want to reclaim the lands of their ancestors, which have been conquered by an evil dragon by the name of Smaug. The land is a huge fortified mountain, and the reason Smaug has taken it over is that it is filled with gold. The caves are filled with a huge amount of treasure that has all been stolen from the dwarfs. Now we can only estimate how much gold was in the mountain, but if we go off what the size of the mountain as well: it is a lot of gold.

For starters, the dragon can fit inside the cave, so it is vast in size, and we also see a whole swimming pool of molten gold. Now one scientist has done the research and estimates the amount of gold that was being shown in The Hobbit movie. By calculating the size of Smaug compared to the size of the Hobbits, the analyst was able to perform an estimation formula known as the parallelepiped.

All in all, after the calculations came in it was thought to contain 16,646,250 metric tons of gold, which is around 9 Olympic sized swimming pools. This would be worth 676 trillion USD, which means if Smaug was real, then he would be 12,000 times richer than Bill Gates.

For more perspective, this mountain would contain 11 times the entire world’s GDP, around 70 times the total of banknotes and bank coins available in the whole world. Over 5 times more than the total amount of money on the entire planet. So that means Smaug is 5 times richer than the entire humanity, of course, that is only in gold.

So more scenarios would come into play, for example, if the market was flooded with gold then undoubtedly the price would go down. However, at the end of the day, Smaug would be extremely rich.
