Sick, Tiny Puppy Rescued by Woman

Grace Higgins | March 22nd, 2018

Marcela Wedel was not interested in adopting another dog into her home. With four rescue dogs already, it was safe to say she had a full house already. However, when she watched a dog named Maia, who had been rescued from a terrible situation, give birth to puppies, she had a change of heart. Marcela became enamored with the runt of the litter, who she named Puppy Grey. This story really begins six years earlier, however, when Maia and two other pit bulls were rescued from San Jose, Costa Rica. The three dogs were living on a property that was a drug lab and they were chained up on the property. Maia and the other dogs were covered in blood, either because they were used as guard dogs or even because they were involved in dog fighting; no one really knows for certain.

After the dogs were rescued from those horrible conditions, Maia was fostered by a friend of Marcela. She was very pregnant and just two weeks after being rescued she gave birth to a litter of four puppies, including Puppy Grey who was the runt of the litter. Puppy Grey struggled, not only because of her size but also because she had trouble walking and moving around like her siblings could. When Marcela took Puppy Grey to a veterinarian, she was told the puppy had neurological problems and it was suggested the puppy be euthanized. Rather than give up on the puppy, Marcela took her home and began to work with her instead. The puppy went through therapeutic exercises, swimming, and even acupuncture. Then, she began to walk on her own.

Despite her setbacks, Puppy Grey was as happy as could be and really seemed to love her life. However, her issues began to flare up and one day she lost the ability to walk. Marcela took her to the vet, where she was told the dog needed emergency surgery. Sadly, the surgery did not help and Puppy Grey is now paralyzed from the waist down. However, this has not stopped Marcela or the dog from enjoying their life together; the pair loves to travel and even show others that a disability can’t stop you from living a fulfilling life!
