A stray dog was picked up in Burke County, Georgia and gave birth to six puppies not long after. The mom dog and her puppies were taken into a foster home for some time, and then all seven dogs found their way to the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Massachusetts. One of those little pups was a girl named Phoebe. From the beginning, she was incredibly nervous. She was terrified of everything and no one knew why. They feared she would have a hard time finding a forever home because of her shyness and fear, but that was not the case. A couple visited the shelter and fell deeply in love with little Phoebe.
A woman named Jillian Kuehn and her girlfriend were visiting the Northeast Animal Shelter to find a dog to adopt. They found many dogs while there, but it was Phoebe who stuck out to them; she had approached them to sniff them and they knew they had to meet the six-month-old pup. When she was brought into the visitation room, however, she was terrified. She couldn’t walk on a leash and had to be carried by a staff member. She shook uncontrollably whenever Jillian or her girlfriend tried to touch Phoebe. So, one of them took off their hat and placed it on the ground; Phoebe immediately took in her mouth and began to play with the hat. That was the turning point.
Despite her fearful nature, the women decided to adopt Phoebe. They were told by an adoption counselor that Phoebe would always be a fearful dog and would have issues around people, animals, and even house guests. The women were not deterred; they were ready to help Phoebe. When she arrived in their home, she was a wreck; she got sick in the car, hated going outside, had accidents indoors, and was terrified of everything. They were patient with her and kind, and slowly Phoebe began to open up. She’s now a confident, loving dog that still has some fears but is ready to face them with her new loving family.
