When a family lost their home, they could no longer care for their dog Ritter or his sibling, Corky. It broke their hearts, but they surrendered the dogs to the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Indiana. Once the family left, Ritter was devastated. He was heartbroken and scared. Most dogs who enter the shelter environment feel that day: they don’t understand why their family is gone and they are frightened and confused by the loud environment at the shelter. Ritter was placed in a kennel and all he could do was stare at the ground in his new environment. He was clearly so confused and upset by his situation. Everyone at the shelter did everything they could to comfort Ritter and make him feel loved, but they knew it could not replace the love of a real home and family.
Ritter received plenty of love and attention from all the shelter staff, and he was so happy to be outside and to play. The staff knew he was heartbroken and they decided to do something about it. They posted the sad photo of him in his kennel on Facebook hoping someone would see the sad, sweet dog and come adopt him. The post was shared 3,000 times and made its way to a woman named Sophie Spenia who was looking for a dog. When she saw Ritter’s photo, she knew they were meant to be together.
Sophie saw the photo of Ritter thanks to her sister, who knew she wanted a dog. She went straight to the shelter to meet him and she was a little nervous about meeting him because she knew how sad he was based on the photo. But her worries washed away the moment they met and Ritter came running to say hello to her and placed his head in her lap. She adopted him and says he’s adjusting well to his new life!
