Rescue Dog Gets First Toy

A woman named Nicole Wasieleski is a volunteer at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. She loves dogs and enjoys her time at the shelter helping the animals staying there. She had no intention of adopting another dog from the shelter, but that all changed when she met an older dog all alone in a kennel. The older dog looked like an old wolf and was very gentle and sweet. The dog was ten years old and her name was Kairi. She had been through a lot in her life, after suddenly losing her family recently. Nicole adopted the senior dog and brought her home but she was struggling to adjust to all the changes in her life. Nicole knew Kairi needed something of her own to make her feel secure and safe in her new surroundings.

So, Nicole took Kairi to a local pet store and let the dog pick out a toy for herself. Kairi seemed to understand what was happening and immediately knew just what she wanted. She was immediately drawn to a funny looking pink dinosaur that she found in the store. Nicole says she was laughing and tried to get Kairi to pick out a more “normal” looking toy, but she was set on the pink dinosaur. She carried it all around the store and went straight to the register when it was time to leave. It turns out that dinosaur is now the most important thing in the world to sweet Kairi.

Kairi takes her pink dinosaur with her everywhere she goes, snuggling it and playing with it constantly. She even lets her doggy siblings play with it, but they know not to destroy it like other toys—the dinosaur is special. Kairi has terrible separation anxiety, and the dinosaur is helping as she is working through crate training. But her parents have a backup plan just in case: they recently purchased an extra dinosaur just in case something happens to this one!
