A foal named Tye was just nine days old when he tragically lost his mother. But that night he gained a best friend in a dog named Zip. Zip is a 5-year-old rescue Australian Cattle Dog. His mom, Karla Swindle, says Zip has never really been that interested in the foals she raises on her farm, mostly keeping his distance and watching them from afar. But Zip stepped in when he knew he was needed the most. Tye’s mother became sick after giving birth to him and things were not looking good for the horse, and Karla stayed close to do all she could for her. Zip tagged along and while Karla cared for the mother, Zip laid next to the foal to comfort him. Sadly, Tye’s mother did not make it—but the little horse was not alone.
Zip insisted on staying by the foal’s side, comforting him and keeping him relaxed and happy. Karla says the foal seemed to know that Zip was trying to keep him calm. Zip wasn’t just interested in comforting the foal that night, though. Karla says Zip decided it was his job to care for Tye the foal. Every time Karla went out to feed the foal, Zip would run out first and wait for her by Tye’s stall. As soon as she opened the door Zip rushed inside to lay next to his friend. Soon, Tye the foal put on weight and began growing into a healthy horse thanks to the TLC from his friend Zip.
These days, Tye spends most of his time out in the pasture with his older sister. He is learning all about what it means to be a horse and while Zip likes to come along with his mom to the pasture still, he knows he is no longer needed in the stall with Tye. The foal is grown up now, and like any good dad, Zip knows it’s time to let him go.
