It was a very cold and rainy night in February, far too cold for anyone or any dog to be outside in the cold. But sadly, that’s just what happened to a little puppy named Halo. Someone brought the little pup to the Santa Maria Animal Center in California around 10 o’clock at night. The shelter was closed and the individual just abandoned the puppy outside. The little dog was so scared and wasn’t sure what to do, and it was raining. So, she followed her instincts and took shelter from the rain behind a trash can. That’s where she stayed all night, in the pouring rain all alone.
The next morning, a staff member came in early and found her there. The staff member had arrived early because she was meeting someone there who was donating a bag of food. That’s when she noticed little Halo behind the trash can and brought her inside. Halo had picked a good spot to stay dry, but the staff member got her right inside so she could warm up after her ordeal. Halo was lucky the staff member came in early that day, as she would have been outside longer if not. Who knows what might have happened after the stress of being all alone outside.
While everyone at the shelter was upset by how Halo was dumped, they also saw it as an opportunity to educate the public on the proper way to drop an animal off at the shelter. It’s important to note that abandoning an animal is illegal and just wrong. There are animal control officers available at any time to pick up dogs and surrendering a dog to the shelter is not illegal—but dumping them outside is. The good news is that Halo is now doing well and doesn’t have any health issues from her ordeal. She will be ready for adoption soon!
