Pit Bull and Rabbit Have Sweetest Friendship

Grace Higgins | November 5th, 2018

A woman named Mindy Hayes, who lives in Erie, Pennsylvania, adopted a rabbit named Sophie last year. She was cautious about bringing her into her home and introducing the rabbit to her dogs. It’s well documented that dogs and rabbits don’t always get along; a rabbit tends to bring out the predator instinct in most dogs. So, Mindy slowly introduced the animals to one another to err on the side of caution. However, that was far from what happened when Sophie the rabbit met Grace the two year old rescue pit bull.

There was an instant connection between Grace and Sophie, who sniffed one another and then immediately bonded. It was incredible to watch; the pair were inseparable. Sophie would hop around the house and Grace was always right behind her. Grace the dog actually began to groom Sophie the rabbit too, and the pair would end their day snuggling on the couch together. Mindy can’t keep the pair apart; they just love to be together and Grace can’t get enough of licking Sophie’s head. Rabbits are very social animals, just like dogs, and they quickly form loving bonds with people and their fellow animals. It’s clear that Sophie the rabbit has done just that with Grace the dog. Rabbits consider grooming to be a sign of affection, which is why Sophie is so loving with Grace, who grooms her each day.

Sophie the rabbit is a Flemish giant rabbit and is eleven months old, which means she will weigh up to 20 pounds when she’s finished growing. When Sophie spreads out on the couch next to Grace, they don’t look all that different in size. While many people are in awe of the friendship between the unlikely animals, Mindy says it makes sense to her: Grace had a terrible start to life and was rescued from a fighting ring and lived her life tied to a tree. It’s easy to think Grace would be aggressive after that situation, Mindy says it’s made her more loving and kind to every animal and person she meets. And now she has a friend to join her in life!
