A woman named Khemjira Klongsanun lives in Bangkok, Thailand and is an avid runner. In fact, she is quite competitive in races like marathons and half marathons. She runs these distances quite frequently, but one such marathon was unlike any other she had run before. She was participating in a local race when she spotted something on the course. She had run just seven of the twenty six miles of the race but she saw a little puppy on the side of the road. He was alone, with no siblings, owner, or mother nearby. In that moment, Khemjira made a decision: she picked the puppy up into her arms and then she kept running. But, she did not stop there.
She carried the puppy in her arms for the next nineteen miles. There were certainly opportunities for her to hand the puppy off to someone else, like a spectator, but she did not. She kept running with the puppy and the pair finished the race together. That might have been the end of the race, but it was not the end for Khemjira and her new puppy running companion. You see, Khemjira is a dog lover and she knew just what to do with the little puppy: she took her home to be part of her family.
The puppy, who she named Nong Chom, got to meet her other dogs and she fit in with the crew immediately. Khemjira wanted to be sure that Nong Chom didn’t have a mother or siblings also in the area where she was found, so she went back to check. But there was nothing; it seems the dog was there all alone. It is possible that Khemjira did not run the marathon as fast as she might have liked, but she saved a life in the process and that’s certainly the best reward of all!
