Luka Magic Continues, Clippers Survive Celtics

Grace Higgins | November 21st, 2019

In just 26 minutes of action against the hobbled Golden State Warriors, Luka Doncic scored 35 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 11 assists. Following that game, the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Boston Celtics in overtime to survive a Jayson Tatum three-point shot that sent the game into overtime.

In the last two games, Doncic has posted stat lines of 42-11-12 and 35-10-11, making two straight 35-point triple-doubles, which is more total triple-doubles than Kobe Bryant had in 1,346 career games. It’s a weird stat and ultimately has no effect on who is the better player, but it is notable as to how dominant Doncic has been as a 20-year old.

For the season, Doncic is averaging 29.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 9.4 assists per game. As a 20-year old, Doncic has career averages of 22.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. In NBA history, only five times has a player under the age of 21 has averaged 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game: Luka has done it once, about to be twice, LeBron James did it twice and Tyreke Evans did it once.

In fact, only 10 players have averaged 20 points, five rebounds and five assists in their sophomore NBA season: Oscar Robertson, LeBron James, Jerry West, Grant Hill, Dwyane Wade, Larry Bird, Bob Cousy, Magic Johnson, Sidney Wicks and after this season Doncic will be added to that list.

Doncic has the record for most triple-doubles before turning 21. His 15 triple-doubles top James five and Johnson’s seven.

After the Mavericks dismantling of the Warriors, the Clippers and Celtics battled in a game that saw Kawhi Leonard and Paul George share the court as teammates for the first time.

The chemistry between the two was noticeable off, as Leonard only scored 17 points. The two will have to learn how to co-exist if the Clippers want a chance to escape the Western Conference. The West boasts five elite teams in the Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets, Rockets and Jazz. After the first round of the playoffs, one of those teams will be eliminated.

The game was back-and-forth all fourth quarter. Tatum hit the game tying shot to force overtime after stepping on the shoe of George and forcing him to fall down. Luckily for the Clippers, Lou Williams was able to close in overtime, scoring 27 points throughout the night.

Leonard hasn’t proven to be the best player in the league this season, as his inefficiency and load management has eliminated his name from discussion. In just the few games he’s been back, George is looking like the premier player for the Clippers.
