LeBron Scores 20… in the Fourth, George Puts Up 47, Goldschmidt Traded to Cardinals

Grace Higgins | December 6th, 2018

It’s been a hectic week for LeBron James, with all kinds of people weighing in on how he plays the game, how he should play, and the fact that he may or may get the help he needs in Los Angeles to get back to being a title contender. Kevin Durant’s comments on Wednesday were very telling, with him questioning why anyone would want to play with LeBron due to his need to dominate the ball and the offense to such a large degree. Guess we know he won’t be a Laker… At any rate, LeBron shut them all up both during and after his team’s 121-113 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night. LeBron scored 42 points in the game in total, but it was his 20 in the fourth quarter that would prove to be most crucial. With just under nine minutes remaining, the Lakers trailed by eight points to the Spurs. At one stage, he scored 14 points in a row to change the look of the score from 91-85 Spurs to 99-97 for the Lakers. His five points in the final minute and change was just the icing on top and ensured the win, giving the Lakers four wins in a row on this home stand.

Elsewhere, the Oklahoma City Thunder got a big performance from two of its stars in New York as they swatted aside the once-again awful Brooklyn Nets 114-112. First of all, Russell Westbrook made history against the Nets by recording his 108th career triple-double. With his 15 rebounds, 17 assists, and 21 points, Westbrook found his way past former Net Jason Kidd into third place total. He is now 30 off Magic Johnson and a full 73 behind Oscar Robertson in first. Not only did Westbrook go off, but his running mate Paul George did, too. The forward helped the Thunder turn around their largest deficit ever, 23 points, with a stirring 47 point showing. He scored 25 of those points in the final quarter alone, with the biggest shot being a three pointer made with little over 3 seconds to go to put them in the lead for good. The win takes the Thunder to 16-7 in what will be a hotly contested Western Conference battle all season.

In MLB news, the Arizona Diamondbacks made the decision to trade first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday for three players and a future draft pick. Goldschmidt has made the All-Star team six years in a row now and comes off a strong 2018 in which he hit .290 with 33 homers and 83 RBIs as the D’Backs contended for a while in the NL West. Next season will be the final year on his contract, meaning the Cardinals will have some work to do in order to keep him in all likelihood.
