Kuzma Dismantles Pistons, A’s Preparing for Murray to Enter NFL Draft

Grace Higgins | January 10th, 2019

The Los Angeles Lakers made a big statement of intent last night as soon as the game tipped off against the Detroit Pistons at the Staples Center. It was simple: don’t allow Blake Griffin anything easy. The power forward only ended up with 16 point of the plan, but the first quarter still didn’t work as intended. That’s quickly changed as Kyle Kuzma began to take over. The former Utah player, a budding star in the game that consistently scores double digits every single time out, had been struggling with a back injury and missed some games last week. He came back last time out and had one of his worst performances in the yellow and purple as he shot just four for 20. On this night, though, he would post a ridiculous 43 points in just three quarters of action as he led the Lakers to a 113-100 win. That will bring your average up in a hurry for sure. There is still much for Kuzma to do if he is to become a top-tier great in the game. He scored that huge total with recording a single assist, drawing comparisons to Kobe Bryant. While he might not be at that sort of level yet, he is approaching it and could well get there with the help of LeBron James ‘tutoring’ him.

It looks like history could well be repeating itself. Kyler Murray, at least according to reports from the San Francisco Chronicle, is being expected to declare himself for the NFL Draft in the eyes of the Oakland Athletics. The A’s used their ninth pick in the MLB Draft on him and gave him a hefty contract worth nearly $5 million right off the bat. The Oklahoma Sooners QB, who did win the Heisman, though, was allowed to play football for one last season. Now, that looks like a bit of a bad choice, and it could turn a bit ugly. The days of Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders playing two sports are gone, you’d think. At least it doesn’t look like two sports could, or should, be played at the same time any longer. How this all plays out is going to be interesting, especially seeing as how Kyler’s dad had a similar situation occur. Kevin Murray, like Kyler, was a two-sport athlete. He chose baseball as well, signing for the Milwaukee Brewers. Though he wasn’t the five tool prospect Kyler is known as now, he was still an eleventh round pick nonetheless. After a stint, he chose to quit and went to Texas A&M to play quarterback. He ended up getting sued by the Brewers and a court case played itself out. We’re staring that very thing down at the moment. So, what will Murray do? Will he take the sure thing and stick with the MLB or will he go to the NFL, shun the MLB, and perhaps help further drive a stake into the national pastime?
