George Puts On a Show in L.A., Hayward Leads Celtics in Win, Pulisic Signs With Chelsea

Back in the summer, everyone expected Paul George to decide to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder and make his way home to play for the Los Angeles Lakers. He produced a video series about the decision that heavily insinuated he’d be doing so. When he did not indeed sign with the Lakers, you knew it would lead to him being heavily booed. And that he was on Wednesday night as he poured in 37 points, two of which came on a huge dunk that saw him called for a technical foul for hanging on the rim. Playing the role of villain suited him for the night as he helped drive his Thunder team to a 107-100 win in the absence of LeBron James, the same star he was supposed to be interesting in linking up with for a go at a championship. He taunted the crowd all night long, and played it up, and it helped them overturn a four point deficit coming into the fourth quarter into a decisive seven point victory. The bad news for the Lakers is not only the loss of the game, but also that Kyle Kuzma was a limited factor and has had to have an MRI on his back. Without him and LeBron, the Lakers are in big trouble.

Elsewhere, Gordon Hayward had a heck of a night for the Boston Celtics. The forward, who had went absolutely scoreless in their loss on Monday to the San Antonio Spurs, though, would have to have been worried when he missed both of his shots on Wednesday to start the game. Surely he couldn’t go through another game like that. And he didn’t. He paced the Celtics in the 113-102 win over Minnesota Timberwolves with 35 points in total. He ended the night on 14 of 18 from the field and also had five assists as he helped his team overcome a poor third quarter to win in the end. Andrew Wiggins was the star of the game for the Timberwolves, racking up 31 points in the losing effort.

In one of the biggest moves in soccer in some time that has been related to the United States and its National Team program, Christian Pulisic has officially been announced as a Chelsea player. The London club have signed the young American from German team Borussia Dortmund, but he will play out the remainder of the season with them before leaving for England in the summer. Pulisic has long been held as the hope of American soccer, and with their failure to qualify for the World Cup last summer, this is the biggest, and possibly, best news we’ve had in some time. The pressure will be on for him after having had a bit of slump in Germany this season, but all will be forgiven if he hits the ground running and does what few Americans have: succeed on English soil.
