A few weeks ago it was announced that Jussie Smollett’s ‘Empire’ character Jamal, would not be returning to the show. Fox announced the show would be canceled after next season, as Smollett’s legal problems are far from over. Sources connected to the show are saying that Smollett’s legal problems have permanently tarnished the show. Smollett was written out of the last two episodes of season 5, and axed from season 6, the show has not be able to recover.

Behind the scenes Fox has told the cast and crew if the ratings don’t recover at all, the show may get canceled before the end of next season. In a statement from Fox late Monday, “We are turning the final season into a television event. We are trying to go out guns blazing. You allow fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve.” Some cast and crew members openly support Smollett, even writing a letter to Fox stating they wanted him back on the show. However behind the scenes the source revealed, many crew members and some cast, believe that Smollet made up the attack and should never be allowed to return to the show.

Smollett claimed in January that while out for a walk in sub freezing temperatures, he went to get something to eat and was attacked by ‘two white men’. Fox was arrested for filing a false police report. The charges against him were eventually dropped, however the district attorney, said that Smollett was not innocent and they believed that he hired two brothers to stage the attack. Two brothers that worked on ‘Empire’ in stunt scenes. The brothers were also ordered to send a letter to Fox threatening Smollett’s life. The brothers are currently suing Smollett, for violation of privacy and defamation of character. The city of Chicago also filed a suit against Smollett, to recover some of the money the ‘bogus investigation cost the city.
