Dog Rescued From Meat Farm

Grace Higgins | July 12th, 2019

The moment a little dog named Dermot saw his rescuers, he was so excited. The dog had been living inside a tiny wire cage in South Korea on a farm. He was just one of 200 dogs living on the farm, which was a meat farm raising dogs to be slaughtered and eaten. Rather than facing that terrible fate, Dermot and all of his friends were being rescued instead. For 14 years, farmers have been raising dogs for meat in South Korea and now the practice is being put to a stop. The farmer who owned this dog farm actually approached the Humane Society because he wanted to shut the dog farm down and focus on farming herbs instead.

In 2018, the volunteers arrived at the farm to free all of the dogs and give them a chance at a new life full of love. There were row after row of cages full of dogs who would travel to a nearby rescue center. Then, they would all receive medical care so they could be cleared to fly to homes in England, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States. Dermot’s sweet smile soon caught the attention of the Jones family who lives in England. They saw his photo online and fell in love with him. They instantly applied to adopt Dermot after seeing a video of him. The family had lost both their dogs to old age in 2017 and were casually looking for a new family dog when they read a story about the meat farm. Tracy Jones said she watched the rescue video online and that’s where she saw Dermot—and knew he was meant for their family.

After waiting several weeks they met him in person and started the three hour drive home, where Dermot sat in his new sister’s lap the entire time. He is now settled in with his family and is doing well!
