Dog Barely Survives Mange

Grace Higgins | January 9th, 2019

At first, the woman and her husband thought they were seeing a ghost. They would see a tiny, thin, hairless dog running through their neighborhood. The dog was clearly terrified and would skitter across roads and in between houses and then just disappear. They knew the dog, who was around a year old, needed their help. However, it was nearly impossible to catch her. It took them a week, but they finally caught her and she was in terrible shape. Her mange was so severe that she had no fur and her skin was raw and painful. It was clear she had suffered extreme neglect. She was absolutely terrified and kept her head down and trembled when Leslie Ysuhuaylas from Rescue Dogs Rock NYC picked her up.

She named the dog Ana and hoped for the best for her as she received treatment for her mange. Her mange was so bad that it was threatening her life and volunteers were almost certain she would not survive. But little Ana is a fighter and she made a complete recovery from her starvation, dehydration, and mange. Then, something amazing happened: her beautiful golden blonde fur started to grow back. It was unclear what her breed was before, back when she was suffering and hairless.

These days, it is clear that sweet Ana is a Labrador mix and is turning out to be just a ‘regular dog’ despite her sad past. She miraculously survived and now that she feels well, she’s coming out of her shell. She is still living in medical boarding in Texas as she recovers but will soon be making the trip to New York where she will be ready for adoption. After all she has gone through, all Ana needs now is a loving home where she never has to wander the streets ever again.
