Community Rallies To Reunite Man With Dog

Grace Higgins | July 3rd, 2019

There was a very sad situation at the Gwinnett County Animal Welfare in Lawrenceville, Georgia recently. A homeless man named Mr. Williams and his dog, his best friend of 14 years, arrived at the shelter together. The man had been evicted from his home earlier that day and he had just $40 in his pocket and a car full of his belongings. His car was packed to the brim with his belongings, but he left the front seat open for his dog Lucky, his “shotgun rider.” That’s when the staff realized this was no ordinary owner surrender. Mr. Williams had nowhere to sleep and he had such a strong bond with his dog Lucky. But he knew the dog needed a stable situation and he could not provide it for him.

It was an emotional goodbye for everyone as Mr. Williams signed the paperwork to surrender his best friend to the shelter. He left the building but before walking out he held the old dog’s graying face in his hands and told him they were young when they first got together and now they are both old men. He told Lucky to be a good boy and promised he would be back to get him. Lucky was distraught when his owner left and the staff knew it was important to get him out of the noisy shelter and into a foster home as soon as possible. They contacted the local Senior Services Department to try to get help for Mr. Williams. They were able to get him into a hotel that night through Senior Services and donors. Once Mr. Williams was safe, the next task was to get Lucky out of the shelter.

They shared the dog’s story on Facebook and it quickly went viral. A man walked int the next day and offered to foster Lucky and he’s now living a wonderful life with foster siblings and his foster dad. Soon, thanks to lots of donations through a GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-reunite-lucky-and-his-dad They will be reunited very soon!
