“Batman” Rescues Shelter Animals

They say that not all heroes wear capes. But in some cases, heroes actually do wear capes—which is the case for one animal lover. His name is Chris Van Dorn and he is the founder of the Batman4Paws rescue nonprofit. It all started with a dog named Koko who came to the Pet Resource Center of Tampa as a stray dog. She waited there for months to find a forever home and then was placed on the euthanasia list. With just one hour left to live, she was given a second chance with a home in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. There was just one problem: she did not have way to get there. That’s where Chris came in to help.

Chris dons his Batman costume and helps transport dogs like Koko to their forever homes. That day, he drove eight hours to bring Koko home—and he says he is just the middleman. He helps so many dogs and cats not just find their forever homes, but he travels to bring them from an overcrowded shelter environment to their homes. He certainly does not need to wear the Batman costume to help the dogs and cats, but he find it’s a great way to get people talking about animal rescue. He says the costume makes people smile and they get excited to see him doing good deeds in the shelter.

Chris feels the costume helps embody the good he wants to do and it makes it easy to talk to strangers about animal adoption. Chris grew up watching Batman as a child and started volunteering with animal rescues after adopting his family’s Australian shepherd Mr Boots. So, when he decided to start the non profit he donned the batman costume and Mr. Boots often joins him dressed as Robin. He drives the dogs in his car (not the batmobile!) and even has his private pilot’s license for longer trips.
