Bald Puppies Happy To Be Alive

Grace Higgins | May 16th, 2019

A Good Samaritan was driving in Vineland, New Jersey when something caught their eye on the side of the road. It was five very sick and bald puppies, all huddled together on the road. It was clear someone had abandoned them and the person who found them knew they could not just leave them there all alone. The individual called the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter and an animal control officer rushed to the scene to pick up the puppies. There were in such a terrible state that he took them straight to a veterinarian because they needed urgent medical attention. All five puppies were suffering from mange, had eye infections and sores all over their body in addition to swollen feet. They were also very emaciated and it was clear they were neglected and not well cared for in their previous home.

Each puppy was examined by the vet and then taken to the shelter where staff and volunteers couldn’t believe what terrible shape the puppies were in when they arrived. It was clear they had been through so much, but that did not break their spirit the puppies were so sweet and grateful to finally be safe. Each of the puppies wagged their tails and kissed the faces of the staff. They believe the puppies are around five months old and are likely a cane corso-mastiff mix but no one will know for sure until their fur grows back. They are currently receiving medical treatment to soothe their skin so the fur can return to their little bodies. They are on antibiotics, receive medicated baths, and are receiving eye medication along with weekly vet checks.

The puppies are all currently in foster care and despite their many ailments each is doing quite well. The shelter even gave all five puppies names after Super Mario characters and refers to the group as the “Mushroom Kingdom Five.” The pups are named Mario, Luigi, Daisy, and Princess Peach. Their personalities are slowly emerging as they get stronger and healthier. Soon, each will be ready for their forever homes!
